#191 Museums
The Maritime Museum of British Columbia is situated in Bastion Square and has been housed in the historic 1889 Provincial Law Courts building (where Chief Justice Matthew Begbie aka The Hanging Judge presided) since 1964. It is said to be the most haunted place in Victoria due to the fact it was built on the site of the city's first gallows and that many of the hanged men are buried beneath the foundation. However, I cannot confirm nor deny that claim. Once inside you will find a variety of themed galleries: Early Exploration, Captain Cook and Royal Navy to name a few. It is also home to the oldest operating elevator in Canada. If history, boats or ghosts are not your thing, you can always enjoy the beautiful woodwork, vaulted ceilings and elegant cornices as you wander through the past in this must-see museum.
